PINNACLES (23:19)
2017
an electroacoustic composition for two-channel playback using the sounds of bats

The source material for Pinnacles was collected at Pinnacles National Park in California, one of the newest national parks that was established in January, 2013. In addition to its dramatic landscape and unique ecosystems, it is home to a large colony of Townsend’s big-eared bats (Corynorhinus townsendii townsendii). In the summer of 2017, I made a nocturnal visit to the canyons adjacent to the bat habitat to try out an eight-channel ultrasonic microphone system that I had recently designed. This microphone system is intended to not only capture the ultrasonic signals of flying creatures but also the motion of their sounds for surround playback. All of the sounds used for this piece occurred within less than an hour of recording time. The sounds of multiple bat species and insects are heard in juxtaposition at various different sample-rate conversions so as to become audible within the human hearing range.
